Dell AXIM Advance PocketPC (2)
Tom 13 Aug 2003

Photos with descriptions

Ok .. now we have the AXIM up close and personal (Please forgive me for the poor quality of the pictures). As we can see, the body of the AXIM has a metallic silver finish for a nice sturdy look but be warned the above photo does not represent how nice the display is. This is due in part to the theme I am using. Also I am sure the cheap digital camera didn't help either. Believe me, the display is bright and rich and very usable outdoors too.

Located right at the top (dead center) is the power button to the left of that you see a small dot. That dot is the microphone. At the bottom you can see the 4 familiar buttons with the DELL directional-pad in the center. Bottom right is the speaker.

This is a shot of an empty CF slot and you can see the CF connector (white area). The reddish colored block to the left and just below the CF slot in this image is the the infrared port. To the right of the CF slot you see the stereo headphone jack.

Here is a shot of the left hand side. As you can see the sides have a black rubber grip built in witch I personally find to be very nice. The rubber really makes they unit feel very secure in your hands. You may also notice the little black thing protruding from the back side of the Axim in the upper left of this image. This is one of 2 rubber feet located near the top on the back of the Axim. These help to keep some clumsy person from knocking it off the table on to the floor. The empty slot at the top right is for a SD card. Below that and slightly to the left you can see the Scroll Dial. Just below that is the record button witch is conveniently accessible yet not easily turned on by accident. The reset button is located just below this and is very firm so again you don't have to worry about pressing it by accident.

Here you can see the front and back of the USB cradle. What you aren't seeing however is the external power supply. I prefer an external power source. However many of you may find the add power plug inconvenient. You may be able to tell the cradle is made out of a semi transparent plastic that has a black chrome kind of finish. In the front where the Axim sits you can see the 40-pin Cradle/Sync Connector. The slot located to the rear on the cradle is where you would place your spare battery for charging assuming you purchased one.

In this photo you see the Axim parked in the cradle charging. Notice the blue LED lighting up the Dell logo on the front. You can also see my 802.11b CF card in the top.
