Review : Introduction to SUPoX AK780G AMD RS780+SB700 mainboard

Introduction

 

Last year, in Jan 2007, AMD/ATi has a successful launch of their integrated DX9 graphics core, the RS690. The chipset performed well and had a good head start against it's competitor the NVIDIA MCP68 series. In fact, the RS690 or AMD 690G has created a miracle in 2007 as one of the most successful integrated chipsets for the AM2 platform.

In 2008, the same is about to repeat with the introduction of the AMD RS780 or AMD 780G in China on the 23rd of January (other regions will be in March). Although it will be introduced earlier, drivers won't be ready till February to support Hyrbid CrossFire X.

At this moment, we can see that the RS780 is an improvement over the RS690 (AMD 690G) in a few ways. First, it supports DX10 and runs at a higher clock. Secondly, it will support Hybrid CrossFire, allowing the integrated core to work in tandem with an add on graphics card to speed up graphical performance.

SUPoX AK780G will be one of the first board available in the China market on the 23rd Jan 2008.

The SUPoX AK780G supports Socket-AM2/AM2+ (940 pin) based AMD Athlon-AM2 2GTs/5.2GTs 16X16 Hyper Transport processors. It support up to 2.0GTs for AM2 and up to 5.2GTs for Phenom processors with HT3 bus. (Current Phenom 9600 supports up to 9x or 3.6GTs only).

The IGP supports integrated ATi RAdeon HD 2400 DirectX 10 with Shader Model 4.0 graphic processor. It is Windows Vista approved and support Aero Display. It has a maximum DAC frequency of 400 MHz Resolution up to 2560x1600 (Under condition), refresh rate up to 85MHz.
Multiple Display configuration: D-SUB+ DVI-D+HDMI on rear panel , Frame buffer option from 32MB to 256MB. The integrated chipset RS780 supports playback of H.264, VC1, MPEG2 using the UVD architecture. Other features include AVIVO and AMD Hybrid CrossFire Technology.

The board supports four 240-pin unbuffered non-ECC DDR II SDRAM DIMM sockets with up to 16GB of memory can be installed on board. For AM2 processors, DDR2-533/667/800 is supported. For Phenom AM2+, memory supported is DDR2-667/800/1066. It also support Asynchronous clocking mode between FSB and DIMM.

The board comes with 2 PCI connectors compliant with PCI v2.3, 1 PCI Express (x1) connector compliant with PCI Express 2.0, 1 PCI Express (x16) connector compliant with PCI Express 2.0 It has 10 Ten USB connectors compliant with USB2.0 from embedded USB controller (6 connectors at rear panel). The SB700 also supports a P-ATA IDE for One IDE ports (up to 2 IDE devices) with UDMA-33, ATA-66/100/133 support from embedded IDE controller. It also support
S-ATA RAID with Six S-ATA II ports ( or one e-SATA support to rear I/O shield ) with up to 300MB/s from chipset with RAID 0,1,0+1 support.

On the back panel are the expansion ports for Gigabit LAN using Realtek RTL8111B and 8 ch audio using Realtek ALC883 HDA Codec which supports support CD-In and S/PDIF-out. Coaxial S/PDIF-out available on rear panel.

On board is a 8Mb Flash EEPROM with Award Plug & Play BIOS that support Q-Boot for fast bootable device selection. Other features include Keyboard power on, CPU over heat protection, visible health, S_BIOS for bios recover, etc. The BIOS support overclocking Asynchronous FSB/DIMM timing mode, adjustable CPU clock and voltage, DIMM frequency and voltage settings.
