Dovado UMR (USB Modem Router) Video Review  @ OCWorkbench

Introduction

Introduction

ADSL, Cable Broadband. These are just some of the old style internet networks that most readers have at home. Although reliable, the problem is that it is not portable. With the advancement of technology, USB modem sticks are becoming readily available and popular in countries with operators running Mobile Broadband HSPA networks.

In Singapore, all three telecom operators M1, Starhub, Singtel all has competitive plans for such mobile internet plans. Charges for an unlimited 1mbps plan costs only from S$15.00+ to a whopping S$72 for a 7.2mbps.

You get the free USB stick with SIM card with a 24 mths contract to the operator. If you want to share out the bandwidth, it will be a nightmare. There are ways to do that but you might need to power up your PC to run it as a router. That is too time consuming and not worth the effort.

To maximise the usage of mobile broadband, M1 has a plan which provides a Huawei E960 box which comes with a few switch ports, a RJ11 for your phone line (incoming calls are free, local outgoing at 8 cents/min). This seems to be the best plan out of all since you can share out the bandwidth.

That seems to solve the problem but the E960 does not come with a Firewall. The functionalities are also very basic. For those who require more protection for it's internal network, the E960 itself is not sufficient.

Dovado comes to the rescue with it's UMR or USB Modem Router. When plugged in via USB cable to the UMR, the UMR provides the power to the E960. As it comes with WIFI, you can now share the bandwidth with the switch ports or via WIFI. It offers an always on connection just like conventional ADSL / Cable router and it can be used with any operator anywhere.

In addition, there are some interesting features in the UMR. It offers a status information bar when you are in the web configuration page. You can also check the SMS directly from there. Most importantly, there is a connection tracker which pings specific IP addresses. If it detects the network is down, you can choose to reset / restart the modem. It can also be configured to switch to a backup connection when necessary.

With the new version of the firmware. Dovado added some new features into the box. It now comes with SMS remote control. With that you can send SMS messages to your SIM card (within the E960 or USB stick) and read statistics of usage, e.g. Mobile Internet traffic consumption notification. You can also enable SMS Event Notification, to alert you of any changes in the Internet connection!

Now with TellStick, the UMR can be used as the central home automation system. You can now use SMS to control power on/off switches at home. Now you can combine your DOVADO UMR with a TellStickTM and you've got yourself a really nifty home-automation solution!

With this combination, you'll be able to remotely control all the lights and appliances in your home by sending an SMS from your mobile phone!

In order to control an appliance's power switching capability, you will need to have a compatible wireless receiver plugged into the wall-socket which will be controlled by the TellStickTM.

Below is a video showing how the UMR can be set up.
