Configuring Efficient
Speedstream ADSL Router This is not something new to write about. What I am doing here is to simplify and list down the steps to turn your Efficient Speedstream 5660 from a Bridge into a Router. But why router? Well, have you ever thought why you need to rely on the RAS Client to login since you are already subscribed to unlimited traffic plan ? Wouldn't it be easier if you were to just switch on your PCs or MACs and you can surf the net, sharing it with the rest of your family members? Well instead of installing NT or LINUX as a router, you can make your SpeedStream 5660 the router, and hook it up to a hub or switch and start sharing your ADSL bandwidth for internet surfing or gaming. Efficient Speedstream can be configured in two modes, Bridge or Router. By default, when you subscribe to your ISP, they might have set it to a bridge. In bridge mode, your PC which is connected to the Speedstream will be assigned an IP addr (202.x.y.z) which is a real IP. If you want to share out the bandwidth, you would probably want to install two NIC (network cards) and run a NAT. Once that is done, your internal network users will be able to surf the net. This is somehow quite troublesome because you would need to turn on this intermediate machine which has two NIC and works as a router to route packets between the internal network and the internet (external) network. That is why we are here, we throw away that intermediate PC (with 2 NIC) and make the Speedstream 5660 as the router. |
