VIce III Xtreme Cu Cooler + Wing Fin Heatsinks
Azriel (15 September 2000)

Introduction

Everyone knows about the Nvidia's Geforce2 GTS. The reason being the fact that it's the first graphics card that has a GPU (Graphical Processor Unit) which takes the stress off the CPU. Now, since the CPU is unhindered by some of the graphical instructions that are needed to be processed as they are routed over to the GPU of the Geforce2 GTS, games/benchmarks are reaching new levels of performance as never before. Before long, many gamers felt that there seems to be somewhat of a graphical bottleneck in games where settings where all set to the maximum. Take for example Quake 3 Arena. Running it at 1600x1200 resolution at 32bit with everything maxed out drags the Geforce2 GTS to its knees with framerates dropping to around 30FPS on a P3-700@933mhz.

Now, you might be wondering whether it could be the fault of the P3-700@933? Apparently not, because I could run my P3700 at a higher speed of 980mhz stably and the results are the same in Quake 3 Arena. Around 30FPS, just marginally higher than at 933mhz. Maybe it's the Geforce2 GTS card that is creating the bottleneck? I've been trolling the Internet websites and newsgroups and the resounding voice among them was the fact that there is a memory bottleneck in the Geforce2 GTS, crippling its memory throughput and the only way to alleviate this problem was to overclock the Core and Memory Clock speeds. But before that, let's have a look at the "victim", my Leadtek Geforce2 GTS.
