Shuttle AV30
Overclocker 20 Mar 2001

So much of AMD solutions, we shift our focus to the VIA Apollo Pro266 DDR mainboard. Shuttle AV30 is one of the leading manufacturers that launched this mainboard weeks ago. As we are swarmed with lots of boards, the review is slightly later than before.

VIA Apollo Pro266 chipset supports the Intel Celeron/Coppermine CPU and brings it to the next level by supporting DDR RAM. Some of the more important features of the VIA Apollo Pro 266 chipset include the following :

Double Memory Bandwidth

As a consequence of the excessive demand on memory data transfer for the currently computer operating system and 3D software, PC100 SDRAM, with 800MB/sec and PC133, with 1064MB/sec data transfer speed will be vanished in the evolving industry. To confront the enigma, Shuttle introduces a new generation of memory form¡XDDR SDRAM in our AV30. Not only the price of DDR SDRAM is close to the traditional PC133 SDRAM, but also the bandwidth is extended to 1600MB(PC1600)/sec. up to 2.1GB(PC2100)/sec higher. The achievement of data bandwidth is 2 times greater than PC133. Shuttle AV30 is equipped with three DDR SDRAM slots, which can support DDR SDRAM up to 3GB. It can fully resolve the problem of memory bandwidth and promote the system performance to a brand-new field at once.

V-Link

Unleashing breakthrough of V-Link bus technology, the interface bandwidth between the North and South Bridge boosts up to 266MB per/sec, which is twice as fast as traditional PCI bus. Thus, it noticeably increases the performance of external high-speed I/O devices. The V-Link bus is an extension of the internal memory bus structure and further assures performance with a secured turn-around time and low latency. VIA Pro266 chipset is designed for supporting the brand-new DDR SDRAM memory. To provide a smooth migration path for current system designs, you can always maintain a superior performance of either single or dual PIII processor based systems.

Hardware Monitor

Keeping track of the PC's temperature voltage and fan speed, AV30 endows over voltage protection and over current protection to our customers. It serves as a guard for your CPU and PC peripherals.

Built-in Network Chip

The built-in network chip of AV30 supports 10/100Mb Ethernet, is designed for either home or enterprise networks. Accompanied by its additional offer, Window ME, users can share the hardware resources and the increasingly popular bandwidth of broadband network simultaneously.

Looks like there will definitely be a performance boost to the existing Intel solutions. Well, let's take a more detail look at the package, specifications & benchmarks in the next few pages.
