VIA C3 733Mhz (1)
Ken 22 Aug 2001

The last time I used a low cost CPU was the Cyrix 200Mhz. In fact, I was quite surprised by that little Socket 7 processor which was screaming fast on my ASUS Socket 7 board. Many years have passed and we see more processors from different companies and today we look at it again, but under the VIA label.

For a budget system, we don't usually go for the highest rated CPU out there in the market. This is usually the case if you were just setting up a new company with budget constraints. A 20 systems for the workers at office do not need to be hell screaming Pentium 4 or Athlon system. In addition to that, we might want to lower costs by reducing costs without spending so much money on fan and heatsink. Well the C3 conforms nicely to this specifications !

Something that can work steadily and perform just right for Office applications will be good enough. What caught our eyes is the VIA C3 Processor aka Samuel2. Samuel2 core is the successor to the Samuel Core of VIA C3 (formerly Cyrix III). The architecture remains unchanged but with an additional 64KB of full speed L2 cache. Built on the 0.15micron manufacturing processor, it is one of the smallest Core at 52mm square almost half of 100mm square of the Intel Celeron processor.

Not only does it uses a lower manufacturing process, it also uses a lower voltage of 1.5v instead of the 2.0v on the Celeron. It looks like it's going to steal some market share of those users who just need to operate mainstream productivity applications and for web browsing. With its low power consumption, it is also an ideal CPU for value desktop and notebooks.
