SonyEricsson P800 - What's Hot & What's Not ...
ngws 30th Dec 2002

Contacts

The Basics

The Contacts listing in the SE P800 has basically the same functionality found on the Nokia 7650. For example, each contact (on both phones) can hold various info like the your email, URL address, telephone nos and of course, a photo ID.  However, the SE P800 has some limitations ... I can't find a 'Pager' field?!! Most of the built-in fields are repetitive and in this instance, the 7650 has far better flexibility for its large selection of fields. One interesting point to note is that the Photo ID on the P800 can now displays in full screen instead of a thumbnail ...

Quick Tabs

As you can see, the contact view has some enhancements to facilitate quicker navigation. First off, there are quick tabs lined up alphabetically at the bottom of the screen for one-touch selection. You can hot-sync your P800 with your favorite software like Microsoft Outlook for example, to update your contact list.

Hot Links!!

On the Nokia 7650, you can create a new SMS/email or assign a voice tag or personal ringtone from within each contact. However, the SE P800 goes one up and has a distinct advantage as all contact infos is what I called a 'hot-link'! For example, the URL entry (Contacts) in the Nokia 7650 is purely for viewing only. Selecting it will bring you nowhere other than to edit the entry. On the SE P800, selecting the URL will launch the browser and it starts loading the page!

Likewise for all other entries ... like creating a new email or SMS or MMS! It's so cool .... you only need a tap :)

However, to add voice-dial command or to personalize a ringtone for a contact, you will have to edit the contact before you can access the feature .... it would be nice to keep everything under a single page ...

PIM (Calendar & Tasks)

Calendar

The Calendar has three different mode of display; Daily, Weekly and Monthly. If you have read my Nokia 7650 review (or if you owned one), you can see the similarities here. To me, the graphical presentation is however, slightly clearer on the SE P800. This is strictly a matter of taste. Some would prefer a layout this way ... others would like to see something else.

You can choose your preferred 'alarm' tone from the list of supported sound formats e.g. midi, amr etc. and also the time interval, viewable hours etc.

Tasks

Tasks is very much like the 'To-do List' in some phones or PDAs. Over here, you have the option to set an alarm (see comments above) and multiple level of priority which is unfortunately is lacking in the Nokia 7650. You can also attach a note or memo as a reference.

JOTTER

Drawing Board

Need a quick sketch to prove your point? Asking for direction? Well, the Jotter feature is a welcome addition and in FULL COLOR too! There is a choice of 4 pen sizes and a palette of 16 colors, a note page (with option of entering texts in bullet or bold and an acceptable palette of useable colors).
