Overclocker 20 Mar 2002

Benchmarking

We conduct the a number of tests on the setup with the following configuration :

Test System:

  • Intel Pentium 4 1.5G Engineering Sample
  • ECS L4S5A SiS645 mainboard running 100/166 async mode
  • IBM 15G 7200RPM ATA100 HD
  • AOPEN 40X CDROM
  • MSI Geforce4 Ti5700 Graphics card w/Detonator driver 27.20
  • ATi 8500 w/4.13.9017
  • Nanya DDR333 256MB DDR
  • Channelwell 375W AMD Approved PSU

Quake 3 Demo 1

Quake3 is probably the one of the most important software to be used for testing graphics cards. In our test, we ran the test at least 3 times to obtain a stable sustained result. In our chart, we compared the results of Chaintech AG321 in non-oc and oc vs MSI GF3 Ti200.

Below are the results of Q3 Demo1 running at various resolutions in 32bit colour depth.

From the results, it looks like the 128MB Chaintech GF3 Ti200 is just slightly faster than the MSI GF3 Ti200 64MB. Well, if the pricing of 64MB and 128MB cards are quite close, I don't see why you wouldn't want to spend a bit more for a 128MB card :)

In our tests, we overclock the card using nvmax. Although we are able to run steadily for q3 at 250/570, 3Dmark2001SE fails. To demonstrate maximum overclockability, we reduce it until 3Dmark2001SE works and all 3D graphics applications do not show any tearing. The results of running it at the rated speed of a Ti500 (240/500) shows that you seriously should buy a GF3 Ti200 and overclock instead of spending so much money on a Ti500.

The performance gains over standard timings 175/400 is around 2.3% ~ 24%, the differences is larger when operating at higher resolutions.
