NEC e606 Review (3)
Jam July 2003

Built in camera

It does have indicator lights which are very fun to use it has 3 different lights red blue and purple which can be set to flash when you get a email text msg video call normal call battery low or when charging the phone and can be set to just flash once per sec twice per sec of 3 times per sec.

In the top picture it has Blue lights under the buttons, well this is not the whole case, it seems that the Num pad has green lights when the navigator control has blue lights. It gives grate quality when in dark places.

Camera’s, Photos and video

As I have said above it is a 3G phone and it has 2 cameras. Both of the cameras give average Quality pictures and I suspect they are of the same build. The phone is able to record video and sound as well but we will get to that in a minute

Here is a picture taken by the camera. It’s not to bad quality for a mobile phone camera. The pictures look a hell of a lot better when you view them on the phones screen, I think this is because the pictures where meant for that job, yet they are big.

This picture is taken at only 3 inch’s away from the Microsoft box and is set on high Quality yet it is still sickening quality. It takes pictures instantly as you click the button that is just extremely fast. (But then I would rather have more quality then speed)

Media

Now lets get to the good stuff! The video! Since it is a videophone you would expect it to record video as well as have video conversations and it does. We will not be letting you download a sample of video because only one MP4 computer player can play it which is made by Philips even Divx failed to play it right (Divx would only play the video and not the sound) anyway the video Quality is amazing the only let down is you can only record up to 12 seconds of video at a time (I was a little angry about this but I soon got over it.) it does record Video and Audio at the same time and writes into MP4 format (a difference after using a 3650 which records into 3gp format which is just not as good as MP4 in my books)

Music, ring tones and Poly

This phone has the most amazing ring tones it does not play MMF tones such as most Samsung phones yet it can produce the same sort of sounds like Dogs barking and cows mooing. It supports Mid & Midi for poly ring tones and it can play 16 notes at once although it sounds more like 40 tones at once. It is also very loud much louder then the Nokia 7650 and very clear it is much like music to my ears.

The phone’s speaker (which produces the poly sounds and speaker phone) is on the back flip where there are two holes.

The phone can play audio files via the speakerphone or via the headsets, which are included. It plays audio in AAC, 3ga, and WMA format I am using WMA since I have only found one encoder that the phone will take the music files from it seems the file size must be under 5MB as well other wise the phone will just not accept the file from the connected computer. Listen to sample ringtones.

The Speaker phone cannot be activated in a normal phone call only when in a video call which is a little annoying I mean if it’s there let us use it.

Memory and Data transfer

The phone has 30mb memory which is very large for a mobile phone but then if your going to be recording video taking pictures and listing to music its always a good idea to have more memory I mean its better to have more and not use it then it is to have less and hate the phone for not handling your media needs.

With the phone being a video phone it would need high data transfer speeds to transfer sound and moving images over grate distances at the blink of an eye and so they built 3G you all may know of GPRS but what you did not know is that GPRS is 2G GPRS can give speeds of around 56Kbps but 3G can give around 400Kbps and soon 4G will be coming out in about 5 - 10 years with speeds of 2Mbps which is just a silly speed I mean its not like we going to be transferring 2 hour long films on our phones so 4G really is not needed (but sounds cool)

When the phone is within the 3G-network area you can place video calls and access all of the 3G services like sending video MSGS using email downloading games and apps or downloading the new Matrix 3 trailer. But when you drop out of the 3G service area it instantly switches to 2G (or as said above GPRS) when on 2G you can only send pictures in MMS not video, you cannot have video calls you cannot download films or do virtually anything other then a average MMS capable phone can do.
