The Tracert test

Using the tracert at command prompt, we did a tracert to www.singnet.com.sg to check out the latency. The first hop took 126ms which is 10x slower than normal adsl line. The trace ended with 11 hops and it took an average 329ms to reach its destination.

From our experience, anything that is within 400ms is reasonable if you are the patient enough.

Conclusion

As you can see, the results are indicative of what you would get within a building. A lot of factors might influence the speed of access. Judging from what we see, the demo was probably running at 384Kbps.

For the mobile user who requires access to office networks and immediate access to net for usage, this is definitely something that everyone has been waiting for. If you are a gamer that requires low latency, this is definitely not a good choice for you.

One thing that most would have overlooked is the terms and conditions. It indiates that VOIP applications might be blocked. If you were thinking of saving some mobile IDD cost, you might have to reconsider. Another thing is to note is the 2GB limit under the fair usage policy.

It looks like more players will come into the HSDPA market in 2007. Singtel is also doing a trial and we should be seeing Singtel and possibly Starhub entering this market. More competition means more options for everyone.

So will you jump onto bandwagon ? Discuss here.
