Introduction

The SiS672FX, supporting Intel® Core 2 Quad/Core 2 Duo/Pentium® D/Pentium® 4 series processor with Hyper-Threading Technology and FSB up to 1066MHz, features a PCI Express x16 Bridge, flexible Single-Channel DDR2-667 Memory controller, Mirage™ 3+ graphic engine, and SiS MuTIOL® Technology, which connects with the SiS968 MuTIOL® Media I/O. SiS 672FX fully support DX9, Certified for Windows Vista Premium.

Similar to the SiS 671FX, the SiS 672FX also incorporates feature throttling technology. When the graphics core is not used, the clk is slowed donw to conserve energy. In the SiS 968 south bridge, it also allows power conservation by not powering unnecessary components of the south bridge. That is to say, if the GbE is not in use, it will not be powered up, thus saving energy. SATAII power can also be auto disabled if not in use.

SiS again is integrating the Mirage3 into the SiS 672FX chipset. As it uses a thermal enhanced packaging (TEBGA), the total max heat generated is only 5W. Even without the north bridge heatsink, the chipset will not burn out as compared to other makers.

This can conserve energy of up to 40%. It seems that the chipset is aimed at good image quality and low power consumption. It would definitely be a good choice for entry level low cost mainboards.

The advanced Mirage™3+ graphics engine, combining with Pixel Shader 2.0, Texture Pipelines, Texture Filtering and Cubic Mapping technologies, enables the SiS672FX integrated chipsets for desktop PCs to deliver excellent graphics performances under 2D and 3D conditions. With support of SiS Real Video Technology, the image quality and definition of digital entertainment devices, such as TV, VCD, and DVD can be presented perfectly and thoroughly under Windows Vista™ Premium Edition. This gives a good image quality with high score in HQV.

The PCI Express is a new standard of I/O interconnect. It has several advantages over legacy PCI. Furthermore, it is PCI compatible in software. The SiS672FX integrates a x16 Host-to-PCI Express bridge that is compliant with PCI Express SPEC 1.1. It also has lane reversal capability to provide maximum flexibility.

SiS MuTIOL® technology is developed into three layers: the Multi-Threaded I/O Link Layer delivering 1.2GB/s bandwidth to connect embedded DMA Master devices and external PCI masters to interface with the Multi-Threaded I/O Link Layer, the Multi-Threaded I/O Link Encoder / Decoder in SiS968 to transfer data at 1GB/s bandwidth from / to the Multi-Threaded I/O Link Layer to / from the SiS672FX, and the Multi-Threaded I/O Link Encoder / Decoder in the SiS672FX to transfer data at 1GB/s from / to memory sub-system to / from the Multi-Threaded I/O Link Encoder / Decoder in SiS968.
