The Unit

Don't underestimate this small compact UMPC. The KOHJINSH UMPC SA1F00 is a full fledge UMPC which is capable of doing what most of your PDA can achieve.

Weighing only 990g, and has a dimension of 218mm(W) * 163mm(D) * 25.4mm, this is one of the most compact UMPC you can find it the market. This unit is based on the AMD Geode LX800 processor and it rnus on XP Home Edition. Just like any standard notebook, this UMPC comes with a  standard 512MB SO-DIMM and a 2.5" HDD inside.

Finished in white, this unit looks elegant with its LED  back lit Touch screen swivel 7" WVGA TFT LCD panel. On it, you can also find 1394 and USB, LAN ports for adding new peripherals to extend its functionality. There is also a 3 in 1 Memory Stick / SD card / MMC, CF Type - I & I/O card support. There is built in 802.11b/g, bluetooth too.  The UMPC claims to have a battery life of 4.5 hours.

We tested out the unit and found it to be quite easy to operate. The keypad is the standard type you see on notebooks, this makes typing easy. Use the stylus and as a pointer or you could use the "pointer" on the left hand side of the panel for navigation.

With its swivel base, the unit can be used with a GPS system say in a car to track down roads etc. You can also swivel the LCD so that it becomes a notepad. This would allow you to write on the screen, sketch diagrams using tool like Windows Journal.

I also tested playing back of DIVX movies on it, they ran fine with no jerky movements at all. If you wish, you could connect it to your LCD TV via the D-SUB connector behind.

As we can see from the system properties screen below, the unit is loaded with XP Home Edition wiht SP2 applied. It runs on the AMD Geode Integrated processor and has 504MB RAM and runs at 498MHz.

In Conclusion, I find this unit very portable and it is something that I have been looking for. The current price is close to SGD 1000 which I find it a bit to steep if we were to compare it with the HP tablet PC for SGD 1499 (1.9GHz).

I think with more manufacturers coming out with 7" screens using the AMD Geode processors, prices will definitely dip further. I look forward to purchasing one for my personal editorial needs (some day).
