Introduction

Today, Microsoft announces the availability of  the most anticipated Operating System, Windows 7 worldwide. Microsoft held a press event this afternoon for the press media introducing the features of Windows 7 at 72-13 Singapore.

In the past, we have used DOS, Windows 98, ME, 2000, XP, Vista. Although they work well for the tech savvy, tasks like configuring, switching printers from home to office can be a mundane task. What about viewing resumes side by side ? Configruing two PCs to share files would require a techie guy using a cross cable and configuring the IP address. Microsoft Windows 7 proposition is to simplify.

Richard Francis, General Manager, Windows Client Group, Microsoft Asia Pacific

In the presentation, Microsoft demonstrated some of these commonly used functions which have been simplified. These include the reorganised Taskbar. It is now cleaner and has less cluster with thumbnail previews of web pages, documents or running video. The HomeGroup feature now allows users to easily share files and printers with other PCs running Windows 7. With Windows Live Photo Gallery and Windows Live Movie Maker (available via download) offer customers great, free options to edit photos and videos and easily share them with loved ones.

Comparing file side by side is no longer a tough job as the feature "Snap" automatically re-size it. Snap two different windows to the left and right borders for a perfect comparison. A nice gimmick would be the "Shake" feature. One shake on the window pane and everything is back to minimize them so that it will stop the prying eyes.  Location-aware printing. Documents are sent to the right printer whether it’s at home or at the office. And with Offline Files users can work offline and automatically synchronize between a PC and documents on their office network.

Internet Explorer 8. Microsoft’s fastest, easiest and safest browser ever offers smart new features such as Instant Search, Accelerators and Web Slices to help users get more out of the Web.

With Windows 7 high compatibility with hardware, you can now enjoy faster start up and shut down and better power management than before. There is also a central for all your mobile devices in Windows mobility centre.

With Windows 7 multi touch feature, users can now interact with the PC with a touch-screen monitor, using their fingers and multitouch gestures. As for multimedia, you can simultaneously stream music, video or photos to other PCs using the PlayTo feature.

For the gamers, Windows 7 include performance enhancements with 64 bits and DX11 support.

Mr. Richard Francis, General Manager, Windows Client Group, Microsoft Asia Pacific Microsoft also demonstrated the interesting feature "Problems Steps Recorder" which gets the crowd nodding their heads. The Problem Steps Recorder in Windows 7 is a trouble shooting tool that records the steps one takes in performing an operation that may result in an error. In other words, rather than simply telling someone what the problem would look like, or describing it without details, the problem step recorder captures the commands, and the surrounding environment that they appear in.

In the next few pages are videos of some of the highlights of the features.

1. MS Windows 7 Moviemaker, video streaming, 3G phone internet sharing
2. Demonstration of Multi touch technology used in games and old games compatibility on Windows 7
3. Demonstration of Multimedia content playback via push pull through home network on Windows 7
