Gigabyte Bluetooth USB Dongle GN-BT02 2/2
Bluetooth 14 Feb 2004

Interface and Tests

Setting up can be quite a challenge if you are using Windows XP with SP2 installed. Just remember to deactivate the Microsoft Bluetooth detected device and run the installation CD.

Once setup is done, the BlueSoleil is launched. After a few seconds it detected both our BT equipped devices - Motorola V800 3G mobile phone and the ASUS A620BT PDA. To check what sort of services are offered by the PDA and the phone, we just click on the phone and we will see the icons near the main bar highlighted. In this case, the PDA supports PAN, Serial port connection, File transfer and Object push. The Phone supports DUN (Dial Up networking), File transfer and Object Push.

By clicking on the My Services from the menu bar, we can see the services that the can can support.

If you like, you can also set the security level. In our case, we set it to Medium so that a passkey is needed for both devices to talk.

In our test, we establish a file transfer connection between the PDA and the PC. We transferred a file from the PC to the PDA and recorded the timing.

It took 6.5 minutes to complete (transfer starts at 12:27pm, end time at 12:33:30) to transfer a file of size 10,018KB

The Average transfer time reading is 27KB/s. Based on calculations, it is around 25KB/s.

Conclusion

Gigabyte has successfully made a product that is so small and yet can deliver the functionalities of Bluetooth within a sight of 100m. That is quite amazing for such a little device.

In our tests, we find that the interface is easy and intuitive but it can be quite troublesome to launch the program just to send some MIDI or JPG files to your PDA or Handphone. Right click, select a file and send via bluetooth won't work as all file transfers have to be done within the software itself.

If you do not need to use the other features like Dial Up networking, or you just need plain transfers, the default Microsoft drivers will allow you to right click and send to bluetooth device. Looks like it could just be a software enhancement needed in future releases of the software to support right click->send.

Overall, a nice little gadget to accompany your PDA and Phone for file transfers.
