Q1 UMPC (Pricing)

If you are a person who always travel for business, you would probably be carrying a notebook and a PDA. The reason being the PDA screen is too small and a 14" notebook might just be fine yet clumsy to carry around. Imagine slinging a notebook carrying 2.5kg on the average while visiting exhibitions ?

UMPC - Ultra mobile PC, is a new kind of computer. It combines the power of Windows XP with mobile-ready technologies that make it easy to access and use your software on the go. With small, lightweight, carry-everywhere hardware designs, you can connect and communicate, accomplish any task anywhere and at any time, and be entertained and informed wherever life takes you.

Samsung announced the Q1 UMPC back in CeBIT earlier this year. Most readers were quite surprised by the move since they are known for their slim handphones and notebooks. Well it looks like Samsung is determined to promote mobile computing through the Samsung Q1.

So what is the major difference between the computing power of a PDA vs UMPC vs Notebook ? Basically a PDA would probably run on a 500-600MHz Xscale processor and comes with 128M ROM, it is pen based and it can surf net, listen to music but the screen is a bit too small for working with office applications. It is light and portable but lack features like VGA output (some models do).

UMPC on the other hand uses mostly a Celeron 900MHz processor, a 7" screen, real PC components like a 1.8" HDD inside. 512MB of DRAM inside as well. It is also pen based but has USB ports, VGA output ports for you to hook up to external peripherals. it also has WiFi for connecting to Hot Spots. Desktop screen area supported are resolutions of up to 1024x600.

Notebooks needs no introduction. It uses a 1GHz-1.8GHz processor and it weighs a lot more ~ 2-3kg and runs on a much bigger screen 12"-15" with PC components, 512-1GB of DRAM. Most has WIFI support, USB, VGA out and desktop screen support can be up to 1280x1024. It can run almost all desktop applications at fast speed.
