Conclusion on Aware A-Book AW-300
Bluetooth 3 Dec 2007

Conclusion

This is the first time we take a look at such a low end PC. While this isn't the kind of PC that most of our readers will look for, it is definitely something that is more suitable as a gift from parents to the pre school children.

Pre loaded with Linux LINOS, it seems to run pretty fast during the boot up phase. The applications are also satisfactory for normal usage. You can use it to read any webmail like GMAIL etc. and use the software to read/write emails using SMTP/POP3. One thing I noted is that if I run multiple instances of the web browser, the system slows down drastically. The browser seems to be a scaled down FireFox and it forbids saving of files. On top of that, it doesn't allow me to install add on like Macromedia Flash. Youtube can't be viewed on this machine. It can only install 'approved' applications provided by AWARE which makes it quite restrictive.

I like the idea of a USB keyboard and WIFI, this allows more flexibility, allowing users to choose their own USB mouse or keyboard to pair up with this AW-300.

In conclusion, this is a first step towards portable PCs that are cheap and affordable. I just don't like that fact I am restricted to what I can install. Secondly, Macromedia flash and Skype can't be used on this AW-300. At USD 199, it is definitely something considering if you don't' use those features. If you really want, go for the black colour, the blue colour looks make it look more like a toy.
