Introduction

Today, NVIDIA lifted the NDA on its first DX10 graphics card, the GeForce 8800GTX codenamed G80. GeForce 8800GTX as most of you have seen leaked information on the net, is the upcoming graphics card from NVIDIA that uses a new unified architecture compared to the GeForce 7 series of graphics card. Instead of increasing the number of pipelines, the new architecture incorporates PHYSICS and Future technologies. This card took 4 years to develop and has a 681 million transistors, 90nm built by TSMC. It also supports Shader Model 4.0

On GeForce 8800, the Unified Architecture features a fully unified shader that dynamically allocates processing power in geometry, vertex, physics or pixel sharing operations. GigaThreads is another technology that is incorporated to support thousand of indepdent smultaneous thread maximising GPU utilisation.

Historically, GPUs have had dedicated units for different types of operations in the rendering pipeline, such as vertex processing and pixel shading. With the unified architecture of the GeForce 8 Series, NVIDIA designed a single floating point shader core with multiple independent processors. Each of these independent processors is capable of handling any type of shading operation, including pixel shading, vertex shading, geometry shading, and physics shading. GeForce 8800 GPUs can dynamically allocate processing power depending on the workload of the application, providing unprecedented performance and efficiency.
